In 3: The Garden verkent choreograaf en theatermaker Nicole Beutler in de geest van de Romantiek het utopische verlangen naar ‘le retour á la nature’. Maar waar staat deze natuur eigenlijk voor? Hoe dieper men doordringt in het wilde en ongerepte, hoe meer wetten en structuren er kunnen worden ontdekt.
Beutler creëert in 3: The Garden een tuin, een verborgen stukje gecultiveerde natuur, waar zes performers een fysiek ritueel uitvoeren. De symmetrie van het totale ‘organisme’ doet uiteindelijk de grens tussen natuur en cultuur vervagen. Misschien is de zoektocht naar de natuur eigenlijk een vorm van de hoogste civilisatie en wordt de mens daarin gedreven door een verlangen naar natuurlijke orde.

Nicole Beutler liet zich voor 3: The Garden onder andere inspireren door de bijbel, de anti-pop band Einstürzende Neubauten en de utopistische kunstenaarsgemeenschap Monte Verità.

Mis het niet, Dames en Heren. Want Beutlers werk heeft een trefzekerheid en detaillering die je niet vaak ziet; en hoe performance de middelen ook zijn, ze leiden zonder meer tot grote emotionele intensiteit, niet in het minst omdat in en onder al haar beelden de hunker naar ‘samenzijn’ en ‘harmonie’ voortdurend voelbaar is. Zij gaat over vorm en energie, zaken die je kunt verbinden aan hoe sterrenstelses en oceanen ontstonden. Een prachtige onderstroom die alles gestaag voort duwt en organisch verknoopt. Ook als de Big Bang klinkt. Ook als de zo bedeesd ingezette song The Garden van Einstürzende Neubauten uit de bocht vliegt. (de Volkskrant ****)

CONTEXT PROGRAMMA: BACK TO NATURE

In het kader van de première van 3: The Garden, het nieuwe werk van Nicole Beutler, organiseerde nb samen met Theater Frascati en het Goethe-Institut Back to Nature, een contextprogramma met performances, filmvertoningen, een nagesprek en een debat.

Performances & films
Frascati presenteerde samen met Nicole Beutler /nb van 15 tot en met 19 maart 2011 werk van internationale kunstenaars; For Faces van Antonia Baehr, Still Standing You van Pieter Ampe en Guilherme Garrido en Hertendans van Robert Steijn. In de foyer waren doorlopend filmklassiekers te zien rond het motto: ‘Le retour à la nature’.

Nagesprek
Wordt de natuur op het toneel automatisch een tuin: begrensd, bepaald, gecultiveerd? Of kunnen we, voorbij het onmogelijke, de natuur binnen de muren van het theater toch op haar staart trappen? Wat ontstaat er in de poging, op de terugweg naar de natuur?
Filosoof en publicist Hans Kennepohl leidde op 18 maart 2011 een nagesprek met Nicole Beutler en collega-theatermaker Robert Steijn. Beide verhouden zich in hun werk tot het idee van terugkeer naar een ‘natuurlijke staat’. Waar Beutler in een utopische wereld, een hof van Eden belandt, zoekt Steijn op sjamanistische wijze de verbinding met een andere werkelijkheid en het krachtdier in hemzelf. Aansluitend doet Steijn zijn Hertendans.

Debat
Op 19 maart werd tijdens een debat in het Goethe-Institut het thema Back to Nature belicht vanuit dans- en de architectuurgeschiedenis. Wat zijn de complicaties van het Romantische ideaal om terug te keren naar de natuur? Kunnen we überhaubt nog spreken van een natuurlijke omgeving? Hoe verwerken hedendaagse kunstenaars deze thema’s in hun artistieke praktijk?
Theaterwetenschapper Bettina Masuch (dramaturg en artistiek leider van het Springdance Festival en landschapsarchitect Eric Ellingsen (codirecteur van het door Olafur Eliasson opgericht Institut für Raumexperimente in Berlijn) gaven in een korte lezing hun visie op het thema. Het debat dat hierop volgde werd geleid door Hans Kennepohl.

Now halfway through the working process for her latest piece 3: The Garden Nicole Beutler invites a variety of theoreticians to broaden the perspective on its theme, Le retour à la nature. Please feel welcome to join us for the first presentations of material from the studio and for lectures from the specialists – and discuss with us the issues the theme raises in our times.

1 December:
Lecture by JAN VAN HOOFF – Professor Emeritus in Behavioural Biology from the University of Utrecht, specialised in processes of communication and the social organisation of animal species, particularly primates.

Observing nature can make us lyrical about its beautiful forms and color combinations, its fascinating and elegant patterns of movement. But these qualities do not exist to charm us humans; they are directed at impressing other members of the same or other species. Do animals possess a sense of aesthetics?

2 December:
Lecture by LAURA KARREMAN – Theatre Studies research and teaching assistant at Utrecht University, assistant to Professor Maaike Bleeker in research projects, teaching, and the organisation of guest lectures and public events presented by the department. Her freelance work involves research, writing, teaching and dramaturgy.

Looking at the world through animal eyes
We see a human being. But we also see a bird. Marcus Coates allows us to see those two things at the same time in his human-birdsong installation Dawn Chorus (2007). The work of this British performance artist and video maker is an example of the attraction of the animal for artists. In one of his other performances, Coates dresses in a deer skin and performs a shaman ritual for a group of residents of a Liverpool towerblock that is facing demolition. Marcus Coates: ‘You can’t escape your humanness, but the point of my work has been to explore the degrees to which you can test that boundary and entertain the possibility of becoming something else.’ There is a creative potential in looking at the world through animal eyes. Laura Karreman will show Marcus Coates’ work and relate it to the topic ‘le retour a la nature’.

The human need for language
The desire to speak to one another is a natural human urge. People who grow up without any language spontaneously develop a new language, and people who don’t get the chance to do so feel incomplete as a human being. The exact way in which we speak, however, is part of our upbringing, and the language we first learn as a child shapes the way we speak and understand other languages for the rest of our lives. Is language thus a natural aspect of human nature, or a product of our surroundings – our culture?

A short introduction to the theory of evolution
We can observe many differences in nature: yellow butterflies, purple bacteria, green algae, red mushrooms, and even skin-coloured humans. But how did all these different forms of life arise? And what is the purpose of their diversity? We can also observe many apparent similarities in nature: the wing of a bat, the wing of a hummingbird, the wing of a honey bee. But how similar are they really? How did these different types of wings develop?
